The Myth of Writer’s Block

So…I have this thing I do.  If you’re an aspiring author, you probably do it, too.  You want to write, but you sit down at your computer and stare at that blank screen…and just keep staring.  You maybe type a few words, then delete them before sitting and staring some more. You check Facebook, browse Pinterest for inspiration, or update your Twitter feed and then come back to…nothing. No matter what you do, the words just won’t come, and if they do, they’re just not right.

Yep.  Writer’s block.

Except it’s not really a thing.

I mean, it is a thing, in that it’s an experience shared by writers everywhere and we have a name for it and everything.  Except that name is misleading.  You’re not blocked, you’re just…delayed. Someone overturned a semi on the highway, and you’re sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic.  But with a little ingenuity, creative thinking, or just plain JFDI (Just F*ing Do It), you can get around that accident. Maybe it means getting off the highway a few exits early and navigating through unfamiliar areas of town.  Or it might take some extreme off-roading, and of course you forgot your mudding tires. 

You can do it, though. Sometimes it takes writing even if the words aren’t right (JFDI!). Sometimes you need to get away from your desk and do some mindless busy work for a bit — I find I have my best break-throughs in the shower or while washing dishes. Sometimes it even means closing your current work and pulling up a side project, like another story or a short writing prompt.

Or, you know, working on a blog post. Maybe working on a blog post about writer’s block. 

Just, you know, as an idea.

So, what’s you’re best way of dealing with writer’s block?

    Writing e-mails, blogging, sending someone a thoughtful message. It’s a warm up; Shakespeare had his sonnets for the same thing. Whatever typing you can do to try to get into 1st gear and then shift into 2nd and 3rd of writing your novel is the way to go.

    For me, last night it was caffeine and Peer Gynt on repeat. 🙂

    Usually the best cure for myself is to stop, back away from the frustration and go read something inspirational. Reading a chapter, article, or blog post that sets you in the type of atmosphere that you want to write in is very helpful. That, and taking a couple more swigs of wine.
